Biography

I have always made art in one way or another. Even when my children were little and time for my own interests was at a premium, I would sometimes feel compelled to stay up all night to make a drawing or painting. To make a little extra money at that time I worked as a life model and spent the time listening to and absorbing the tutors words and looking at the student’s drawings. Finally, I plucked up the courage to have a go myself and found that I loved life-drawing. I did this for a number of years until my children were grown up and my Mother, who I had looked after for many years, had passed away. At that point I felt a bit lost. My time was my own, but what to do with it was the question. I worked part-time at a preschool but that wasn’t enough.

I started taking painting classes at Northbrook College in Worthing and along with everyone else was given a leaflet about the BA Fine Art course there. I decided to apply and to my surprise I was accepted. This provided exciting, different ways of producing art. Exploring differing materials; an interest in three dimensional work appeared. I attributes this in part, to spending time as a child in my Father’s tool shop playing with nails and wood and anything else I could lay my hands on.

Since starting the degree course my work has become conceptual; investigating themes such as communication, ash dieback disease and most recently the breath and breathing. A subject that suggested itself during the Coronavirus pandemic. I pursue these ideas through sculpture, installation and drawing. When I have completed my degree, I would like to find opportunities to exhibit my work and connect with others who have an interest in the same themes.
